CBD for
Canines

The endocannabinoid system exists in all mammals, including dogs. Dogs have cannabinoid receptors throughout the body. These receptors work on pain, appetite and inflammation and help to restore balance and homeostasis. CBD Oil can help treat many dog conditions including anxiety, arthritis, itching, seizures and joint pain. A recent Cornell study showed that CBD can increase comfort and activity for dogs with osteoarthritis.

One of the most effective methods of administering CBD is by way of tinctures, putting a few drops of CBD oil into the dog’s mouth directly. If you find this method difficult, the tincture can be added to food or treats. During the Cornell study, the team  discovered that CBD was more easily and fully absorbed with a lipid carrier (oil base).

While there are no definitive dosing guidelines, it is recommended that you start with start with a small dose and gradually increase every 5 days, until you reach the desired effect. If any negative effects such as disorientation, excitement or sedation is observed, the dose is too high.  It may take two hours or more before any effects are seen at all.  Only CBD oil with a THC level that is under .03 percent should be used.

If you choose to administer edibles to your dog rather than a tincture, please use caution. Edibles may contain ingredients which may be toxic to dogs, such as chocolate and xylitol.
